Vadivelu - Indian Chaplin!!!

The name 'Vadivelu' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vadivelu) itself gives us a flash of expressions, mannerisms and dialogues he has mesmerized the audience with for years in Tamil Cinema. A non-Tamilian grasps him rarely as he is a pure locally inclined comedian. But that has never made him inferior to be compared alongside comedian greats of the world. Cinema has no linguistic boundaries. Art's beauty lies in its universality across global languages. Vadivelu's mesmerism too extends way beyond dialogues that a non-Tamilian can easily miss. As an Hard-core fan, still grasping each and every inch of him as he starts appearing on screen, I will try exploring my version of 'Vadivelu'.
A Comedian succeeds when audience starts laughing seeing only his face. As he gives a Police commanding look in Maruthamazhai or A King's look in Pulikesi or A Rowdy look in Thalainagaram, he just nails it. I have started laughing numerous times as he enters with that body-shaking royal look (See Image Below). His Dialogue modulations can make even an ordinary scene cracking. I can mention some of Director Hari's earlier movies. Despite being ordinary comedy tracks in Script, Vadivelu would have blasted it with his inimitable style and presence throughout the movie like Kovil, Vel. But Hari's later movies have grossly missed his Firepower (same as Cricket) where new comedians failed with same translation from ordinary to extraordinary.

Kumaresaaaa !!!!

He has this knack of putting even Dance to core of comedy. No one would forget his trademark dance moves. My famous picks - As a lawyer in London movie or In a song 'College Jolly Day' in Manathai thiranthu vittai movie. Add a layer of singing to it. 'Ena Ena Itengalo, 12B Flatinilae' - A modified version of an old song I suppose. Have laughed tons again and again each time he sings comically. Much of his comedy crackers have been a main part of those respective movies which are not that familiar. I would have watched such comedies from these unfamiliar movies in some TV shows. A movie named 'Muruga' that would have never been heard by most. But his famous dialogue 'Laden ta Paesariya??' would have been heard by almost everybody. Its from this movie.
The most inspiring part I see in Vadivelu's portrayal is his ease of bringing out that conservative character in most possible comical way. Male Chauvinism based Vadivelu's performance in Viraluketha Veekam movie has some splendid dialogues - 'Oru Veetla rendu paer sinthikka kudathu di, Purushangara Sinthikkanum, Pondatti atha follow pannanum !!'.  Another one as a core villager in Ottran movie where he comments on the usage of code numbers in telephone like this - 'Theriyum di maplae, na kudutha number ku munnadi nee extra number podum pothae enaku theriyum. Code number road number la enaku thevaiya ? En oorla na paesirukan da, 200 thadava paesirukan da !!'. I love this Code number comedy where he behaves to the extreme as if he has found out some biggest scam of the country. Believe me, Conservative people does that to '200% Match Found' feeling.

Purushan Sonna Onnu Rendu Naalu !!

We call it Adavadi in Tamil (Soft Atrocity, I would call it in English). I can recall one of such famous character he has cake walked - 'Soona Pana'. A so-called Village gangsta threatening with his only weapon 'Mouth'. He just clamours the situation by his words and goes to the height of neglecting even consuming poison like - 'Ena da suma vesam nosam nu kitu'. But as it grows threatening for himself, he is an inverted champ - 'Enda kudikum bothu paathutu iruntha !! Thatti ah va thu vitrukalam la da naaya !!'. I would love hearing that tone tons as he speaks these words especially that ending 'Naaya'. I would relate that to Chaplin's Tramp where the character has its knack of an High class Individual going intentionally humourous in every inch of it. Same way Vadivelu's character always has its Height of Soft Atrocity !! Watch out for my another favourite in a movie 'Sakthi' where there is a situation to say that a tea is not that good in a tea shop. Either say 'Tea nallala pa !!' or 'Yov ithellam oru tea ah !!' or say it like Vadivelu - 'Antha kanmai la thiriyuthae panni, athu nakkumada intha tea ah'. Enjoy the tone !!
Many would easily have these dialogues and many more in their mind. They start using these in their day-to-day life to fill those conversation vacuums with humour. Youth are affected the most. I cant point out many days without using his dialogues to bring humour to a situation. And elderly are no different. They only start with a different word like 'Vadivelu soldra maathiri' and put up half baked vadivel dialogues to try humour on that situation. No one likes to be a comedian in real life. But Vadivelu's impersonation in real life is always exceptional, something that can give everyone real happiness even when we act as a comedian in that situation.

Maatu Itethayum Manusa Itethayum Mix panni adichitaingalae !!!

Remember these dialogues - 'Nee pudungarathu pooramuvae theva ilathathu tha, poi pudungu po !!' and Another one - 'Cone ice ah ma, athu pandigai kalathula koyiluku veliya vipanga'. We have been using it time and then as the situation draws it and smiles following it. Now these dialogues have been used widely to create memes. Yes, Vadivelu's dialogues have been prolific in driving political literacy in Tamilnadu in most possible humourous way. Thats because of the humourous connect people have with his acting. And I promise, I can never bring his whole version. Tons and tons of things emerge as each one sees a different version of him through their own eyes. Vadivelu has been living in every walk of everybody's life beyond cinema. Too much Tamil already into this English article, lets end with one of Vadivelu's English Dialogue - 'Bloody !! Nonsense !! Idiot !! Go and take a cup of tea'. Despite English, go with Vadivelu's tone.

  1. Completely agree!! You cannot spend a single day without seeing Vadivelu face in social media. In one way or other, he shows up somewhere. Not only a comedian, at times, he delivers some sensible role in an extraordinary manner, be it Emtan Magan or Thevar Magan. A true legend indeed!!
